Love the Look: Burlap!

An inexpensive and good looking way to get great texture in a room is to use burlap like you would any other fabric. Here, you can see it as a cushion cover on a settee, a topper over a vanity table, a lampshade (found in a thrift shop for $3), and a pillow cover. You can buy yardage at the fabric store or keep your eyes open and get creative like we did here: the pillow cover is an old burlap sac (also found in a thrift shop, for $1 ) pulled over a long pillow insert and crudely hand stitched closed with some raffia to achieve a rustic natural feel. We love the look!

French Dressing

So your daughter has left for college and you're freshening up her old room- try placing that twin bed against the wall and dress it as a daybed - here we used toiles and stripes. Then hang mosquito netting slit up the back, add every pillow you can find in the house, and create a charming "Lit a la Polonaise".

An end table is created from a knock-down table base covered with some burlap and a block print topper. The glass door armoire contains lots of her stuff, so we tacked up some lace panels to hide the clutter.

The other side of the room still has her childhood dresser, now just the right size to hold the fewer  articles of clothing she still keeps at home, along with a flea market chair with a linen slip cover.

We didn't buy anything new, just used what we had!

Display 101

Dress the top of a mantle by bringing the outdoors in-
Antlers, twigs and pinecones along with a muted tone landscape painting create a natural, peaceful feeling.

Combine fun and function in an etagere-
House your everyday essentials: china, glassware and wine, along with your favorite treasures: shells, books, figurines and small paintings. Create visual interest by varying height, color and texture. Use cakestands and stacks of plates and books to prop up personal objects. A small lamp on a shelf creates drama and atmosphere.

Enhance the top of an armoire with a stylish display-

An initialed trunk, loving cups, vintage black and white photo and conch shell set the stage for a personal vignette in a guest room.
